On November 12, 2025, members of the Wakefield Rotary Club joined fellow Rotarians from across District 7930 at the annual Bob Wood Memorial Heroes Celebration, held at the Andover Country Club. The event recognized and celebrated veterans from throughout the district for their service and dedication to their country.
The evening’s featured speaker was Retired Brigadier General Jack Hammond, Executive Director of Home Base, a national nonprofit dedicated to healing the invisible wounds of Veterans and their families. General Hammond spoke about the continued mission to provide clinical care, wellness, and support for those who have served, underscoring the importance of community efforts like Rotary’s to honor and assist veterans.
This year, the Wakefield Rotary Club proudly honored David A. Mangan, Director of Veteran Services for the Town of Wakefield. Mangan served in the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1970. Drafted just out of high school, he chose to serve in the U.S. Air Force, building on his experience as an officer in the Civil Air Patrol. His leadership skills earned him a promotion to Staff Sergeant at the age of 19. As a jet aircraft mechanic specialist, Mangan was responsible for maintaining and turning around nuclear strike bombers within 12 hours—critical work that required precision and discipline.
In addition to his current role supporting Wakefield’s veteran community, Mangan hosts the “Kilroy Was Here” podcast, where veterans share their stories and preserve their unique experiences for future generations. He attended the event with his wife, Christine, and reflected on the experience by noting, “The event was very special.”
Across District 7930, Mangan was one of 33 veterans who were honored at the celebration, representing Rotary clubs throughout the region. The ceremony continues the legacy of Bob Wood, a dedicated Rotarian and veteran whose commitment to service and community inspired the annual event.
